The Place des Vosges was one of those for me.

I had seen it in books, in films, in the pages of history. I knew its arcades, its brick and stone façades, the symmetry that makes it one of the most elegant squares in Paris.

And yet, the first time I stood there, in the soft morning light of a Parisian spring, it felt entirely new.
