Lake Annecy – 20 Hidden Gems and Iconic Spots to Explore
From breathtaking mountain views to charming lakeside villages, discover the best spots around Lake Annecy—whether you're seeking adventure, history, or a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.
Ahh, Lake Annecy... Just saying its name brings back a flood of memories.
No matter how many times I return, its shimmering waters and breathtaking surroundings never fail to captivate me.
Having lived in the region for some time and with my family still residing there, I feel an even deeper connection to this extraordinary place.
Over the years, I’ve had the chance to explore its many treasures, from charming lakeside villages to awe-inspiring mountain viewpoints.
If you ever find yourself in this corner of the French Alps, here are 20 of my favourite spots to visit around Lake Annecy.
Discovering Lake Annecy
Lake Annecy is a true jewel of the French Alps, nestled between two imposing mountain ranges—the Semnoz to the west and Mont Veyrier with La Tournette to the east.
Its deep blue waters stretch gracefully between these peaks, bordered by a string of picturesque villages and, of course, the historic town of Annecy itself.
The lake is divided into two shores, the right bank and the left bank, each with its own distinct character and charm.
What makes Lake Annecy particularly remarkable is its balance between natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The surrounding landscapes invite adventure, whether it’s hiking in the nearby mountains, cycling along the lakeside path, or simply taking in the views from a tranquil waterfront café.
However, this beauty comes with its challenges—its popularity as a tourist destination means that summers can be overwhelmingly crowded.
If you truly want to appreciate the serenity and splendour of this place, I highly recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn, when the lake retains its magic without the bustling crowds.
Book your stay in Annecy
One key piece of advice when planning your stay in Annecy is to book your accommodation well in advance.
Annecy is a popular destination, especially in the summer and during major events like the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Hotels, charming bed and breakfasts, and holiday rentals fill up quickly, leaving limited options if you wait until the last minute.
By booking early, you secure the best spots and have more flexibility in choosing accommodation that suits your needs and preferences.
Whether you're looking for a hotel near the lake or a cosy apartment in the heart of the old town, planning ahead ensures a smooth and worry-free stay.

1. The Old Town of Annecy – The Venice of the Alps
Wandering through Annecy’s old town is like stepping into a postcard.
With its pastel-coloured buildings, cobbled streets, and flower-laden canals, the city’s historic centre is one of the most picturesque in France.
The Palais de l’Île, a medieval fortress rising from the Thiou River, adds to its fairy-tale charm.
The best way to explore it is by getting lost in its winding alleys, discovering hidden courtyards, and stopping at one of the many cafés for a coffee with a view of the water.
And if climbing the slope to the castle doesn't scare you, you'll discover a lovely panorama of the city's old rooftops.
2. The Jardins de l’Europe
Right on the lake’s edge, these gardens offer some of the best panoramic views of Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains.
The park is beautifully landscaped, with tree-lined walkways and flower beds that change with the seasons (I particularly like the tulips in April!).
It’s also a great place for a picnic, with plenty of space to relax and watch the boats glide across the lake.
A short walk from here brings you to the romantic Pont des Amours, an elegant footbridge crossing the Canal de Vassé.
Legend has it that lovers who kiss on the bridge will stay together forever, making it a favourite spot for couples and photographers alike.
3. The Jardins de l’Impérial
A touch of grandeur awaits at the gardens of the former Imperial Palace.
The lakefront setting is spectacular, and I always love stopping by to admire the view of the crystal-clear waters framed by towering peaks.
The Imperial Palace, a luxury hotel from the Belle Époque, adds an air of old-world elegance to the gardens.
It’s a perfect spot for a sunset walk, as the light casts a golden glow over the lake.
