Adaptation of the painting by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, 1783, with OpenAi

You’ve heard it. I’ve heard it. Your neighbour who once spent a weekend in Paris and now corrects your pronunciation of croissant has definitely heard it:

“Let them eat cake.”

It’s the most iconic royal mic-drop in history — arrogant, absurd, and strangely… memorable.

The moment when a queen told her people had no bread, supposedly shrugged and suggested dessert instead.

Every generation seems to rediscover it, whether in schoolbooks, protest slogans, or dinner party debates.

It’s a line that cuts through centuries like butter through… well, brioche.

Except there’s just one tiny detail.

Marie-Antoinette never said it.

Not in French. Not in German. Not in passing. Not even with a wink and a fan flutter.

And yet, that one sentence stuck to her like icing on a wedding cake — sweet, damning, and entirely fabricated.

So today, let’s take a moment to unstick it.

This is not about defending royal extravagance or rewriting history in pastel tones.

Marie-Antoinette made her share of mistakes (and wore more ruffles than strictly necessary). But the truth is, she was far more complex — and her downfall far more tragic — than one snappy soundbite suggests.

So let’s rewind the story. Back to the bakeries. Back to the Revolution. Back to the queen behind the rumour.

And yes — back to the brioche.
