Pierre Says: Plan Christmas in June — Genius or Madness?
Because Europe’s best Christmas markets in Alsace, Germany and Switzerland fill up fast, and the smartest travellers are already booking their hotels now (before prices soar and rooms)! 😉
Why on Earth Am I Talking About Christmas… in June?!
I know what you’re thinking: “Pierre, have you lost your mind? Summer hasn’t even begun, and you’re already talking about mulled wine, Christmas trees, and gingerbread? Mais tu es fou!”
Well, let me tell you a little story.
Last week, Cindy — one of my French students from New York City — proudly told me she’d just booked her hotel in Colmar for late November. Yes, for the Christmas markets. In May. She smiled and said, “There were only four rooms left at the hotel I wanted!”
And she was right to hurry. Prices are already high, and they’ll only go higher. Many hotels in Alsace, Lorraine, and Germany get fully booked months in advance, especially by tour operators who block large batches of rooms, leaving individual travellers out in the cold (sometimes literally).
So, if you’re dreaming of visiting the legendary Christmas markets this year, don’t wait. Not for the autumn. Not even for late summer. By then, the best rooms will be long gone — or cost a small fortune.

✨ Why This Article Exists
I wanted to make it easier for you to plan your Christmas market adventure.
I’ve selected 15 enchanting destinations across Alsace, Lorraine, Switzerland, and Germany — each famous for its enchanting Christmas market atmosphere. For each one, I recommend one beautiful hotel (usually right in the town centre) where you can stay.

You’ll find an affiliate link for each hotel: if you book through it, I receive a small commission — but don’t worry, you pay no extra fee. It’s just a way to support my work and help you discover some of Europe’s most festive spots!
And here’s a handy tip: if the hotel I suggest is already fully booked, don’t worry — the affiliate link will automatically show you other available hotels nearby, in the same area or neighbourhood. That way, you can still secure a great place to stay without having to search all over again.
Plus, if the featured hotel doesn’t quite match your style — maybe it’s not luxurious enough, or perhaps it’s too luxurious for your taste or budget — clicking the link will also give you the freedom to browse and choose another hotel that suits you better. You stay in control, with a wide selection at your fingertips.
🎅 The 15 Christmas Destinations
1. Strasbourg (France)
The self-proclaimed “Capital of Christmas”, Strasbourg is where it all began — its Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570, making it one of the oldest in Europe. Picture a giant Christmas tree towering over the main square, half-timbered houses glowing under delicate illuminations, and the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine drifting through the streets. Expect a bustling, lively atmosphere with over 300 stalls spread across the old town.
🎄 My hotel recommendation in Strasbourg: Hôtel Régent****, ideally located in the Petite France district.

3. Mulhouse (France)
Mulhouse’s Christmas market stands out thanks to its unique “Christmas fabric” — a specially designed textile used to decorate the streets, honouring the town’s rich industrial past. The market itself is colourful and lively, filled with local crafts, Alsatian treats, and a giant Ferris wheel offering panoramic views over the festive city.
🎄 My hotel recommendation in Mulhouse: Maison Hôtel Mulhouse Centre***, it will take you only 3 minutes to reach the Christmas market on Place de la Réunion!

You are so right, Pierre; this is great advice. Hotels fill up so quickly, especially during peak seasons such as Christmas. I can vouch for your hotel suggestion in Mulhouse. It was like staying in a fairy tale, and just steps from the Christmas market. Merci !
